Worth your While by Tayla - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
As each new year approaches we all have time to ponder and reflect on the past year; the events, accomplishments, or even failures. It is mostly a time, though, for setting new goals for the coming year. We all hear of “new year’s resolutions: the many things we hope to accomplish in different aspects of our lives. As students, we can set academic goals and resolutions. The new year’s resolution I am going to work on, that will help me be improve as a student, is better time- management.
First, time-management is something you hear a lot about, especially in those business/ success seminars on tape that that we all kind of moan and groan about when your parents turn them on in the car. They say something to the effect of: “until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else”(Peter F. Drucker) or “Either you run the day, or the day runs you” (Jim Rohn). I admit: I am one who moans and groans as well. However, it is so true, time-management is the basis of a successful day at school, which adds up to a successful overall education.
In addition, we have many distractions with technology quickly becoming a larger and larger part of our lives. By removing these distractions, and setting limits for ourselves, we can be smarter with our time. Things like social media can easily take our focus when we are studying or doing homework. I am going to make a special effort to power off my cell phone while I am doing my school work, and put it out of sight, to avoid the distraction and temptation. I know personally, it can be hard to have the control to ignore your phone when it beeps or buzzes. I know for me, if I cave and look at my phone; next thing I know: an hour is wasted, that paper is still left unwritten, or that first math problem is not finished. It is important not only to set aside technology distractions on your own time or homework time, but also in class during the lesson and discussions. Doing this small adjustments can help myself, and all students get the most out of each day of learning.
In school, being able to budget time wisely can be a huge advantage. For example, you must set aside a portion of your time for each class’s homework in order to complete it all with sufficient time. Many students also have jobs, and must add work to their schedules. Others are involved in sports or other extracurricular activities, which also takes time and requires commitment. Point being: a lot of carious activities and responsibilities easily fill our days; and we need to be able to divide our time accordingly in order to have a successful education and school career, while still being involved in other productive, healthy activities.
With that said, finding a balance is what time management is all about; how to juggle sports, work, school, and leisure activities. Those who master this, the time budget are happier and more apt to find success, with less stress or worry pertaining to daily schedule.
To wrap this up, (with a ribbon), time is like money, worth so much and sought after. The difference is: time can’t be earned, can’t be traded, and you can’t ever get it back once it has passed. With this knowledge, I will do my best to make the most of the time in all aspects of my life. I hope to eventually learn to master time-management, to make the most out of each day, especially when it comes to my school work.
