High School Teachers vs. College Professors by Sumeya - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

To say that I am thankful for my high school teachers is an understatement. I am a concurrently enrolled senior, taking three college classes. I have been fortunate enough to have this opportunity to jump ahead and obtain basic courses before I proceed to college. However, I have been rudely awakened by experiencing the truth about unforgiving college professors.
During my high school years, I didn’t take into consideration everything my teachers put in to ensure I would be successful. They accepted late papers time after time. They sat down with me, one-on-one, and had a desire to help me. They would spare class time for us to be able to do our homework, so we wouldn't have to on our own time. My teachers cared to get to know me and watch me excel.
On the other hand, my college professors aren't quite as caring. Explaining to them that we have several events occurring outside of their class and don’t have time to write an essay in two days, does not fly with them. They are not interested in our outside lives; they are there to present us a grade and continue on. In class, the professor lectures for the whole hour, so class time to work on our homework is nonexistent.
Transitioning from my sweet, loving high school teachers to blunt, tough college professors has been a tremendous change. I have a new respect for my high school teachers after seeing what they could have been. I am extremely thankful for the care they have shown to me over the years, but I am also thankful for the tough college professors I have encountered. Overcoming the dramatic change has personally made me into a harder working, more responsible young adult.
