Leadership Role by Stephanie - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

The accomplishment I am most proud of is becoming MCJROTC platoon sergeant. The position consisted of lots of responsibility while still maintaining my grades in tact. The position required lots of extra curricular hours. All of the extra hours helped to develop myself as an individual. Becoming a platoon sergeant lead me to acquire many useful qualities.
There are many qualities I was able to acquire. The most important quality is being able to speak in front of people. As platoon sergeant, immediately starting the year I had to introduce myself to the incoming class I would be mentoring and helping. Although I was nervous and afraid, I knew I had to get myself prepared to speak in front of people on a daily basis. I had to get myself comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. I was able to accustom myself to speaking in front of people. Also by speaking a lot I was able to break out of my shell and I asked questions or answered them with no hesitation. This quality is one that I have been able to keep and use all throughout high school in which I will continue to use all of my life.
The extra curricular hours took a lot of my time but in the end it was worth it. I gained lots of knowledge about the military that I never would have known. When I entered the program I had a certain perspective about the military, but as I continued in the program my perspective of the military completely changed. I now had a passion to join the military. I was so prepared to enter and await the challenges expected. Although I am disqualified due to a surgery I had, I can’t join but I have the skills I was able to acquire in the program to keep.
All of the skills acquired will definitely be useful to me throughout my lifetime. I have learned to stay disciplined and have maintained my public speaking skills. These skills will definitely be thankful for the opportunity I had as being a platoon sergeant. All of the hard work and restless nights paid of for skills that others are now struggling with.
