A Resolution Worth Living For by Sawyer - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

My New Year's resolution is not one that most people have. Most people pledge to have a better health or focus on school more. Mine is actually just the opposite. My New Year's resolution is to spend less time doing homework.

Pledging to do less homework during the school year sounds crazy, but it will actually cause me to become a better student. It is my fourth year in high school and I have spent every waking hour of my life after school doing homework. One may think that this is crazy, that I am a good student. But, this is actually hurting me as a student. Spending all of my time doing homework is causing an unbelievable amount of stress in my life.

Coming home and doing homework every day after school, including on the weekends is enough to stress me out greatly. I don’t make any time to just enjoy myself and my life. I live a high stressed life, always focusing on my grades. While this may not be a bad thing, it becomes bad when it is taken to the level that I take it. Life is not all about numbers defining who we are. Yes, good grades will make me a successful person but there is much more to life than grades. I'm failing to focus on the social parts of life and the fun parts. Being a good student is not just about being a “nerd” in school. The best students are the ones who can work a job, spend time with family and friends, and achieve good grades in class. But I only have one of these things.

Pledging to spend less time on homework is going to open up a whole new way of life for me. I’m not pledging to drop my grades in school all together. I can still maintain the same grades by spending less time on them. I will eventually have more time to hangout with friends and family which will in turn help me as a student. It will improve my social skills which is a vital part of life after high school. It will also help me to relieve stress and enjoy life more. We only live one life and it shouldn’t be spent doing homework in my bedroom. Having a little more fun in life will help me be a more outgoing/less stressed student. I will be able to hit the books harder and absorb more information in school.

All of the nights that I have spent staying up late to finish homework seem alright, but they really cause harm to my brain. I wake up the next morning for school tired and not motivated. Doing a little less homework will result in more sleep, more time with friends and family, and more fun. All of this will result in a life of less stress and more enjoyment. This New Year’s resolution is the most important as it will open doors to other areas of my life that I have been missing out on for so many years.
