I Resolve To Read In 2016 by Sarah - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

In 2016, I have vowed to read more.
My greatest ambition is to write everyday so that when I reflect back on the years behind me, I will have a collection of stories that I can proudly call my life’s work. For the past few years, the time I spend writing has overshadowed the time I spend reading, which I wouldn’t necessarily call an incorrect method of writing. Just because someone does not read does not mean he or she cannot write. However, I believe increasing the time I spend reading could assist me in becoming a better writer and therefore a better student.
Being a conditioned reader will aid me in writing better essays, exploring different genres of literature, and attaining better scores on tests such as the ACT and SAT. Reading is an important part of all of the classes I am currently taking. I am certain that working to become a better and more intuitive reader will always be a beneficial investment of my time because of my aspirations and my role as a student.
It has been three days since New Years and I have already read two books: Diary of An Oxygen Thief and The Perks of Being A Wallflower. While that pace may seem a little rushed and excessive (considering I read two books in three days), I can already see how my perception and my writing have changed now that I am working on processing other people’s work and incorporating it into my own. Perceiving different views and styles of writing has expanded my ideas when it comes to putting my own pen to paper. I’ve even learned vocabulary I didn’t know before such as pragmatic and unconventional.
This is probably the most beneficial New Year’s Resolution I could have made this year. Even though I am diving in rather fast and recklessly, I am unafraid of my initial excitement towards it and the possibility of my enthusiasm dying out as time goes by. William James once said something I believe applies here: “ To change one’s life: 1. Start immediately. 2. Do it flamboyantly. 3. No exceptions.” and I hope I can honor his words in my reading habits in 2016.
