Only the Imaginable by Rodrigo - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

It is difficult to imagine oneself in ten years, especially when asked at the age of eighteen. People my age can only dream of where they’ll be or who they’ll be in ten years. One might imagine living far away from their old home, rich, and successful. Others may have even wilder views such as traveling the world and just embracing life. In order to do this though, steps and trials have to be taken to get to that point in life. In ten years I imagine myself working in a clinic or hospital, working with patients as a doctor.
These past two school years are when I really started to evaluate what I could, and want to do when I graduate from high school. I knew I want to go to college but needed to figure out a major. I’ve been very strong in my math and science courses and searched for a career in such areas. After a bit of research and consideration of many careers, becoming a doctor stood out the most to me. Being a doctor involves many different spectrums of science and anatomy that keeps me in awe. The demand for doctors of all specifications is growing and is due to a growing society.
Being a doctor puts me in good standing to work almost anywhere in the country. The reason I can see myself as a doctor is because it gives me a chance to consult face-to-face with patients. This creates a more fond connection between myself and my impact on the community. The patients I’d be in contact with, and their care, will feel secured and entrust in me. I can’t imagine living for the rest of my life behind a desk answering phone calls doing the same exact thing each day. That just doesn’t fit my personality or dreams. I need to be more active and constantly need to interact with new scenarios and people. This is why the vision of me being a doctor is perfect for me.
One can’t just walk into a hospital and apply to be the next doctor. Becoming a doctor requires a lot of schooling after high school and desire to be part of the medical field. Almost all big colleges and universities offer a pre-graduate program to later apply to a doctorate school. The amount of education depends on a person’s specific interest but always a minimum of a bachelor's to be able to apply for graduate school. This is why schooling is so important when it comes to becoming a doctor. Without an education most states won’t let someone practice being a doctor without adequate credentials.
Education is the key to success in most cases and is what will help me prosper in life. My vision of myself in ten years may indeed be inaccurate or could change in college, but today it is the one I hold most firmly to. Working as a doctor in a hospital allows me to connect with the community and have a sense of worthiness. This vision is my most powerful and can only only be obtained by furthering my education.
