My Future by Rebecca - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
In the upcoming future, I aspire to become an actuary. I plan to attend a college with a strong actuarial science program to build a solid foundation in the field and prepare for the numerous actuarial exams I will have to pass. Drake University offers me that as well as internship opportunities in the nearby city. I hope to gain valuable experience through an internship that will prepare me for after college. Aside from my major in actuarial sciences, I also plan to minor in Spanish and finance or mathematics. My minor in Spanish will not only be useful when communicating with others in my future career, but also allow me to better understand another culture and become more well-rounded. It will allow me to pursue my passion of traveling and learning about other cultures through a travel abroad experience- which I hope to participate in during my college years. My minor in finance or mathematics will allow me to gain a deeper understanding of an aspect of the work I will encounter as an actuary.
Not only does Drake University offer the degrees I hope to attain, but it also allows me to pursue my other interests such as soccer, photography, and traveling. It offers soccer as an intramural sport so I can play for fun but not have to make the huge commitment to playing a college sport. Also, it resides nearby a large city and smaller, more scenic towns creating plenty of photo opportunities. Finally, Drake University has a strong travel abroad program so I can pursue my passion toward traveling and hopefully take some photos along the way.
During college, I plan to take at least two of the actuarial exams which is typically what employers look for. I hope to land a job as an actuary at a firm in the city that will allow me to continue to study for and take more of the actuarial exams. Later in life, after completing most of the exams, I desire to open up my own private actuarial firm and make a name for myself. I realize these are some high goals, but I plan to work extremely hard to achieve them. However, I also plan to remain family-oriented.
In ten years, I see myself finishing the final actuarial exams and working full-time as an actuary at a consulting firm. I plan to be working during the day and going home to my husband and children at night. Also, I will play a major part in my children’s lives. If I am fortunate enough to have a girl, I will be her Girl Scout troop leader so Girl Scouts can influence her life the same way it has influenced mine. I want my children to grow up with strong morals in place, but plan to encourage them to be creative and pursue their passions. At home, my children will learn to have fun without technology and become well-rounded by being involved. I will be volunteering as much as possible in my community in ten years; whether it be at church or in the schools. To sum up, in ten years I will be working as an actuary, raising my family, and making a difference in the world.
