Key to Success by Reagan - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Life is about looking ahead and being able to face any circumstance that comes our way. Yes, problems can occur and mistakes can happen, but my goal for 2016 is to be on top of things as a student. Now that I am a senior, I think back to the times when I kept saying “it’s okay I have time” or “I’ll wait to do it later.” This is no longer true. Time is running out whether I like it or not, and my next chapter in life is happening very soon. I will need to prepare ahead, and not wait till last minute to get things done. This New Year’s resolution will help me not to only be a better student, but it will always prepare me to be a better adult in life.
Studying is not the most exciting thing to do, but it is done all over for various subjects. Rather it be for math, science, psychology, government Spanish, or English. People have to study for exams, tests, quizzes, and a lot of other ways that teachers decide to test knowledge. For me, I usually wait last minute to study for a test, and sometimes I get lucky and do well and sometimes it’s the total opposite. My goal is to cover material when it is first handed out so when time comes, I will be prepared. I will not be the student who is up until four in the morning stuffing last minute information into my head, and freaking out when the teacher is handing out the papers. I will push myself to become a better student by doing this. I will feel better about my grades and my classes.
School is going to start getting hectic with spring sports starting and senior events happening. I have been on the tennis varsity team all four years of high school, and miss plenty of school for it. The days I miss I have several papers and information that I don’t get covered because they cover them in class. I plan on working to get my work several days ahead and completing my assignments so they are turned in when they are due, instead of falling behind and getting stressed out. Also I can ask teachers ahead time if I need help or if I have any questions. I know staying on top of things around these times will keep me in check.
Now that time is coming to an end, I need to continue to put my priorities straight. Most seniors think this is the time to mess around. It being the second semester students tend to get lazy and not try as hard as they were at the beginning of the year. Not me. I want to be the student that is proud to walk across the stage when it is time to graduate. I want to work my butt off to prepare myself for tests, and quizzes, and any other assignments. If I stay on top of things this last semester, it will not only show on my reports, but it will give me a feeling of success.
