Forthcoming Delight by nikita - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

I walked in through the thick crowd of people to enter the building. Seeing the subtle and dramatic art work on the wall, my eyes sparkled in awe. The fine texture and color of the wall made me feel like I was entering a primitive era. Those various paintings were hung meticulously in the curvaceous space of the wall. As I walked through the door, I took in a long breath. I felt intimidated by all the sculptures and its designs, since it was my first time in a museum in the United States. “Where did they even find that?” I thought to myself as I looked up at the massive dinosaur skeleton. The array of the museum captivated all of my senses. Walking through different areas of the museum, the Expedition Health exhibit intrigued me the most. As I stood there, staring at the real laminated human skeleton, I knew that I also wanted to be a part of this terrific and didactic environment.
After that stirring moment in the museum, my long application process was rewarded with a volunteer position. Rushing through the drips of the Sunday morning fog, I walked to my car to make sure I reached the museum on time. I pressed my head against the car window, admiring the beautiful sun rise. I thought about the new experiences I would encounter each day; after all, I was volunteering in my favorite place. I was ready to start my day as an Expedition Health volunteer in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I volunteered in the lab by helping the visitors understand the different labs, using the equipment, and answering their questions. I also shared my knowledge from school by presenting anatomy carts, such as the brain and lung cart. It was exhilarating not only to learn by expressing my own knowledge, but to also learn from others. All the knowledge I had, from making my own scientific research paper to taking AP Psychology in school, I articulated in my presentation of the brain cart. Sometimes the knowledge flowed in both directions because I would encounter experts in the field of neuroscience, who made me more knowledgeable about the brain by sharing the information they knew.
Not only have I loved all aspects of science, from learning by talking to experts to getting my hands dirty in the laboratory, but I am also interested in a huge range of science topics, from human anatomy to botany. One of the highlights of my time in high school was a class called “Scientific Research and Design,” where I had the opportunity to complete my own research project under the supervision of a mentor. I connected with an A&M University professor to create a project that looked at the effects of Lumbriccus terrestris on the growth of Brassica juncea during water stress. This led me to win an award in the regional science fair, and truly made me confident in my passion for science, particularly biology, and the research process. All my involvement in science programs is opening up path to the future, by giving me more hands on experiences.
Furthermore, I also want to partake in many scientific research projects in college. Volunteering at the museum and completing my own research project has opened up my door to the fascinating world of science, which I will pursue in my future. Only a good education can make my future bright. Science is my passion, and my educational life will always revolve around science in college. In 10 years, I see myself working in a lab as a researcher, which would be my part time job. As my main job, I see myself working in a hospital. I want to be a well known doctor like “Sanjay Gupta.” I want to strongly contribute in the field of science to make a positive impact in this world as a whole.
