Year of the Most Focused Me by Naabia - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

This year I will be focused, whether that be in school or in other aspects of my life. I think being more focused in everything I do will allow me to be better in all respects. My freshman year of high school, my focus was very out of whack. I didn’t spend the time concentrating on my schoolwork that I should have. I was adapting to the things high school brought that nobody really warned me about. There is a huge acceleration of difficulty between middle school courses and high school courses. My focus should have been developing study habits. However, as someone who never had to put that much effort into school prior to my freshman year of high school, studying was far from my mind. My GPA reflected this at the end of that year too.
I’m a junior now though. I’ve grown, matured, and learned from a lot of the mistakes I’ve made over the past two years with my academics. I went from a 2.8 at the end of my freshman year to the 3.3 I have now, halfway through my first semester as a junior. I’ve really made my education the priority it should have been all along. I’ve made improvements in the way I approach school now. I’ve gained a stronger work ethic, modified my attitude, and I have spent the last six months focusing on what I want to do with my life. However, I’ve also realized I’m behind. I need to center myself, and focus on the stressful year ahead of me if I want to come out on top. There are students who have been focused since day one, but I haven't and I recognize that. Therefore, I’m going to need to a little extra focused if I get where I want to be.
