Becoming a Class Officer by Miguel - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
Becoming a class officer has been the greatest experience of which I am most proud of as well as the most stressful event of my life. The amount of planning it takes to execute an event or a field trip difficult. Out of the seven class officers, we all do a different task in the planning process. As Historian it is my job to promote the class events, this entails making posters, creating ads on social media, and making flyers to pass out students ensuring the event reach their potential. Another job of mine is ensuring that we have volunteers for the event.
Although I didn't have training for my position, I quickly learned on the job. For instance, at every fundraiser, we make the customers fill out a slip to learn “How did they hear of the fundraiser.” I noticed toward the end of the year of Junior Year that Facebook ads worked better than any other form of advertisement. I learned that most of my town I live in has a Facebook account.
Other, steps that I take to ensure that we get plenty of people at our events is to talk to people during school and at local stores about the events as well as putting flyers at various locations all around Somerset. This has been challenging for many other class officers because they are not very social. When it comes to face to face interactions that is my expertise, and I have encouraged the other class officers to go out of their comfort zone and to interact with people and be confident and friendly. When it comes to people buying a product they like a confident and friendly person. Something I have learned over the years that I’ve been a class officer is that it truly is difficult to be a good salesman. Also, you have to be open to all people. Many of the other class officers judge on appearance, but you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
A fundraiser I’ll always remember is a bake sale we did at Wal-Mart, a man that was dressed in torn overalls and torn shirt with worn out loafers came up to our booth and asked if we took credit card. One of the class officers responded “No sorry, but all that is left over is things that are over twenty dollars.” The man looked shocked and got angry saying that the class officer implied that he is poor. After calming down, the man walked into the parking lot and came by the booth with a brand new 2016 Corvette. I believe that if my friend was not rude the man would have been a huge sale. After that incident, the class officers went through an orientation led by me to ensure that incidents like that don’t happen again. I would teach them the essentials to being a good salesperson.
This accomplishment has made me a better leader by promoting class events and getting to meet new people every time we have another fundraiser and events. Ensuring that all class events are selling out and making sure that every event is successful. Also influencing my peers to become better salespersons and leaders by not putting themselves above others.
This is why I would have to name being a Senior Class Officer as my greatest accomplishment. My achievements have impacted not only the community but me. It has impacted me because I have grown over the year into my position although it can become very stressful. I have impacted the community, especially when coming to setting the status for the rest of the class officers to come. I have shown through our determination to get things done and I think it has been absorbed by the class officers of the underclassmen. They have been meeting with the Senior Class Officers and trying to get advice so they can also achieve their goals and exceed them just like we did. Also, I believe that we have ignited a sense of community involvement by getting families to come out and support our school. The final achievement was influencing our community and being recognized by the city officials because of our hard work.
