Integrity by Madison - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

As I look forward on the next ten years of my life. I will remember being seventeen years old and being genuinely happy. At my age there are a few things that I want to take place for me to be able to consider my future successful. They consist of graduating from Portsmouth West High School and being an active member of the extracurricular activities like Key Club, playing soccer, and also being involved in musicals. Soon after I graduate, I would like to expand my knowledge even further by attending Shawnee State University to get my Bachelor’s Degree to become a Registered Nurse. I want to stay close to home, not only because I do not want to leave where I grew up just yet, but also because I have heard from several family members and friends of mine that Shawnee State University has the best nursing program around us. While I get my degree, I would like to work part time to help pay for my apartment, gas, groceries, and other necessities. Then, after I graduate, I hope to marry my high school sweetheart and start to raise a family. After a couple of years go by, I would like to go back to college to advance in a field that I love already, and to be able to do more things than what a Registered Nurse could do, so I plan to go back to be a Nurse Practitioner. After I become a Nurse Practitioner, I would want to work in the area for several years until I reach my age of retirement.

These accomplishments are not achieved without several challenges, like becoming emotionally invested when I will have to see the sad faces of my patients and their families when I will have to tell them the not so good news. Or even worse, being forced to maintain my composure as I watch a patient that I grew to love, slowly drift away. All I could ever do was smile and let their final days be the best days of their lives. I will always be determined to be a light to my patients; I never want them to see the dark days, never from me at least. From just giving them some water to praying with them. To be a nurse you have to know strategy. You always need to be on your toes. Never stress, but if you do, you cannot show your patients. Just always have that big smile on your face and be positive. Even if things aren’t okay show the patients that even through the toughest times, they need to be positive.

I never would have thought that the decisions that I am making as a senior in high school would hopefully stick with me for the rest of my life. They will lead me to develop a skill set that will allow me to help someone every single day of my life. I know I will not receive any of this through handouts but rather if I work to the best of my ability to accomplish my goals. It will not be easy but I never will lose hope of making my dreams a reality. With my determination driving me I will be able to succeed in the career that I loved.
My education will help me get there by all the things I just explained. I will make the most of my life I have here on earth. I will come across challenges for the rest of my life and I believe that my teachers and my upcoming professors will teach me to be strong while being a nurse.
