Volunteering for my community by Linda - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

Throughout the four years of high school I have accomplished many goals. These achievements made me transition into a mature adult. One of the accomplishments I have done is Deca which is an organization of business and marketing students. Deca influenced me to do better throughout high school by becoming a prominent leader and helping me overcome my fears. I became a member of Deca my sophomore year. The organization I volunteered for had different events including the faculty play, fall festival and Roca Kidz Club. Volunteering in these events helped boost my confidence, influenced me and helped me become a kindhearted and more compassionate person I am now.
The summer of sophomore year I was officially elected Public Relations Officer. I was in charge of social media accounts and creating a positive influence by illuminating the rooms with past exciting conferences that we had attended as a team. By becoming a Public Relations Officer I literally had to step out of my comfort zone. Eventually this made me feel an amazing power. The power wasn’t an ego type of power. Instead this imperium gave me a kind and caring feeling which helped me really fall in love with volunteering.
One of my favorite events to volunteer at was Roca Kidz Club, which is an organization that brings kids together from ages 4-17. Kids who come here would have dinner, participate in exciting activities such as face painting, basketball and dance parties. These children came from an unfortunate home situation. I felt by being with these kids not only did I learn a lot from them but also helped their minds leave their present situations. Roca has impacted my life so much and really got me thinking about what I want to major in. Pediatric Nursing seemed to be the perfect fit in the future. I hope to not only help physically sick kids but also aid kids with mental challenges and disabilities. I have realized how much I truly enjoy helping others. I want to help them in anyway I can and change their life for the better. When I come home from Roca I feel a relief that I have changed a little boy or girl’s life. They come into the program upset however go home with a smile on their face which makes my night.
One tragic event that turned my world upside down occurred this past June. Two beautiful little boys, Josh and Jay Michael from the Roca program were in a house fire on a school day. I always looked forward to seeing these two kids each day and not being able to ever see them again has left such a deep emptiness in my heart. The two siblings always seemed happy despite the ups and downs they went through each night at home. Their love for each other was consistent even at the moment they passed away in the fire. They were found lying together embraced in each others arms. Their passing has also had a strong influence in my nursing decision. In the future when I become a nurse they will always be on my mind and in my heart. The sad event which I never wish would’ve occurred has impacted my love for my community and made me mature much faster.
