Extracurricular activities should not be required for high school graduation. This is because current students are barely graduating according to the needed standards. Many students struggle to keep up in school, as the educational standards keep increasing. Due to this, schools are installing after-school aid to catch students up to the required levels. Otherwise, these individuals cannot graduate on time. Also, when these helpful programs are added, additional funding is required. The need for funding will only increase if extracurricular activities become a requirement. This is because the activities must be available for all. An additional cost cannot be added for the extracurricular activities, as many struggling families cannot afford to pay more for school.
Continuing on, many students already participate in extracurricular activities. These individuals who participate, have decided and paid to be involved. For this reason, they are more likely to try and aim for success. By making extracurricular activities a requirement, individuals will simply conduct certain actions as they need to, not because they want to. This takes away the free choice of extra activities.
Additionally, those who are already participating in various events and activities, cannot afford to add more items to their busy schedules. If they do, performance will diminish as students are simply running around trying to be present at all which is needed. Although the idea of having extracurricular activities as a requirement for school is not a bad idea; students simply will not be able to handle it. Overall, it creates more work, increases the need of fundings and stresses students with additional activities. For this reason, extracurricular requirements should not become a necessity for high school graduation.
