Arizona by LILLIANA - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

I’ve always had big goals in life, like setting out to work in the Law Enforcement program and becoming a Border Patrol Agent. Growing up with multiple aunts and uncles as well as my father working in law enforcement a family as police officers is what influenced me so young. You’d think coming from a “broken family” with a critically depressed mother, a father who had several other children to take care of that I’d already given up on my big dreams, but taking the easy way out was not an option, improving myself instead of let all the troubles get to me still motivates me today.
Coming from a broken family was never something I never let effect academic work, if something was troubling me I would do what it takes to overcome it and work it out, like having a math deficiency, my family has never been good at any aspect of math, to us, math was a whole different language we never seemed to catch on to it. Working hard trying to overcome things has brought to my attention how resilient I can be.
My family always kept the mind set to help me do well in school. They would ways say how they don’t ask much from us but to do our “job”, which was go to school and do well, and that is where I got my motivation from. Disappointing my family was something I never tried to do because they do so much for me, so if doing well is what I have to do, then that’s what I’ll do. It was never a chore to do well in school, it clicked so easily from knowing how much my family does for me with the little that we have, making school one less thing to worry about for them was the least I could do.

Taking college prep classes as well as AP classes helped me get ready for my future in college and real life. Staying on top of things, even pushing myself to do something to get it done was a trait I was not born with and had to constantly push myself. Going into Law Enforcement and Corrections requires lot of organization and staying on top of things as well as getting them done is what I’m going to do in college and as well as in my job and real life.
