Small Things Count Too by Kyara - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I tend to be the person that forgets the little things in life, only events that have had a big impact stick with me. However, it's not the same way with school. I feel proud about the little things that I achieve, be it completing an assignment early or submitting a college application. Looking back, those are the things that have really made my high school career. Not the awards for most outstanding student or the honorable mentions for competitions. It's the honor roll certificates that I get every quarter that remind me of how hard I've been working.
Every time I receive a report card, a sense of joy and accomplishment overwhelms me. My grades aren't a reflection of me, but they are a reflection of the hard work I put into my education. It shows what I prioritize in life, and no matter what I do, I make sure to put school first. Everyone is different; for some it's hard to get good grades, for others it's an easy task. For me, it's just about doing the things I have to get done, with a little extra emphasis. It's not particularly difficult but it isn't easy for me at all.
I'm now a senior in high school. This is the time in a student's life where they either start to relax a little more and slack off or get into gear and work to their full potential. I sometimes waver a bit, but I have not let my grades slip. I still receive honor roll and still see As dominating my report card. I think my perseverance, motivation, and determination are what keep me disciplined and on task. It's a great accomplishment, in my opinion, to be consistent with your academics. I might not have won valedictorian or class president, but it shouldn't just be about the biggest or best things in life. The small ones count too.
