Growing UP by Kristen - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Every little girl’s dream growing up is to get married, have a nice house, and have a big family. I guess you can say this is my dream, too. The only difference is I could live without the big house; a small house in the woods would do perfectly for me. The most important thing for me is to just be independant and happy with whatever situation I am in. If I am not happy with my situation, I hope I will be able to get out of it because I will have a job in nursing that will keep me where I do not have to depend on one person to get me through life.
In ten years, I want to be in a steady financial situation I will be almost in my thirties. I would hope by then, and I will have a little family going. I want to fully be able to support this family on my own, even if it was tough. I would expect the same from my husband so if the worst does happen, we will each be fine. No matter how comfortable you are in a situation, you are never guaranteed the next day.
The way I will get to do this is through getting a good college degree. The degree I would love to get is a bachelors in nursing. Once I get this degree, I want to be able to go into surgical nursing. This may require long hours, but if this is what it takes to make my family great, I am willing to sacrifice. Not only would this make my family happy, it would make me happy. I feel like as a surgical nurse I will have great responsibility. I literally will be helping the doctor put a life back together. Knowing everyday I will be going to work and saving someone’s life will be what makes me feel great inside
This may not be everyone’s first choice of how they want their life to be, but in the end, I know this is what will make me happy. I know that with a college education I will be able to achieve even more than I would if I went straight from high school out into the “real world”. I feel like, in ten years, what will help hold my life together will be my college education. It might sound like I will depend too much on it, but isn't that what a college education is for? To help you through life with the hardships. This is why I rely heavily on my education. I want to be able to better myself and my family when the time comes.
