Extracurricular Activities are a must, or are they? by Kristen - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

High school students are constantly busy with homework, jobs, family obligations, and being teenagers. This is the time in one's life where there are responsibilities; but not usually enough to hold a teen back from doing what they want. So if a high school student wants to participate in an extra-curricular activity, they will do just that. So should the requirements high school graduation be based on participating in such an activity? I tend to believe it should not.
Instead of forcing a graduation requirement on a student, schools should open up many opportunities for students. Bringing awareness to students is a powerful tool that students will reach after. If a student does not like sports, let them know there is a medical science club. If the student cannot participate in activities on the weekend, offer clubs before and after school. There is such a huge world of opportunity for students, and with many options they will find what they like.
I do hope that, although not a requirement, that many students will get involved with activities outside of school. Parents are a valuable asset to encourage their children to explore opportunities. Teachers can sponsor clubs for the group of six students interested in chess. Networking and getting involved is a desire most people have, so it’s up to the adults to help students realize this.
Requiring students to participate in extracurricular may really motivate students, or it may alter their attitudes on getting involved. It is definitely encouraged, and should be pushed, but not required. Many schools offer students the chance to get an extra gold seal on their diploma by performing community service. This opportunity for recognition is motivation enough for many students. Having an option similar to this could be a great alternative to requiring extracurricular participation.
