High School Sports by Kristen - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

High School is a place that will either make or break you. Many people are just going through the motions, but there is so much more to high school than just walking the hallways. If you are required to be in at least one sport whether it be football or golf, you almost guaranteed to learn something from that sport. People say high school sports take away from study time; however, I believe that they will benefit you in the long run.

Many high school students have no clue what it is to be out in the real world; this is why when they get in college their grades plummet and they usually end up dropping out. I believe high school sports could help this. Because they usually do involve extra time out of school, they will help high school student will have to learn to manage their time or their grades would drop. From experience, I know when you are in a sport you do not want your grades to drop. Usually you will end up running or doing some extra things that will make you work harder than you would have if you just kept your grade up.

Another thing that a sport will teach you is team work. For many teenagers they do not want to be social, but if they are forced to work with people they may or may not like they will learn social skills. Social skills is one of the key things you need to get a job. Many of the jobs require you to talk to many people and be able to explain many complicated things. For the kids that refuse to be social there are more sports like: cross country, track, or golf. These sports are very mental sports. If you go into one with an attitude it will affect how you are able to complete the activity.

I believe that kids should start trying new things. I do not think they should just keep going through the motions in high school when they were born to be different. High school students may not be gifted in a sport, but I can almost guarantee that the sport will make you step out of your comfort zone and make you try something new. People nowadays believe that there is one set way to see yourself and that if you are not that way you will not be as popular. Kids need to break that chain, be different, be yourself, and try something new. You never know, you could be the next Micheal Jordan.
