When asked the question, “Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?” I am never quite sure how to answer. The question intimidates me. I can tell you where I will be in a week or a month or maybe even a year, but ten years? It seems like such a long ways away. When considering this question, I asked myself, “Who do I want to be? What does 27 year-old-me’s life look like?” The truth is that I do not know everything about my future-self, but I can tell you some important details I want to be part of my future life. So where am I in ten years? Step into my time machine and we will see…
…WHOOSH THUMP WHIRR THUNK… We have landed in the year 2025. It’s Monday, December 15, 2025, to be exact. At this time, I am 27 years old. I graduated from college over five years ago, with a Bachelor’s in electrical engineering. Now I am working on getting my engineer’s license. I would have already gotten it… if I had not taken a year off work to care for the baby. At 27, I not only have a college degree, but also a family. I got married the year after I graduated college, and we had the baby two years after that. Now that she is old enough to stay at day-care while my husband and I work, I have gone back to my job. We both needed to work, to afford our house payment. The house we just bought is a small three bedroom, two baths, but we love it. It is just the right size for our family and us. I still live in Texas, close to my parents. We are planning to go to see them soon, as Christmas is just around the corner. They are so proud of me… and of course, they love cuddling our baby girl. This is who I am at 27: a mom, a wife, an engineer, a daughter, a homeowner, and a successful person. How do you think she got here?
The answer is simple: education. Did you see the first thing I mentioned about 27 year-old-me? I graduated from college in 2020. College is the next step in my future- getting my BS in electrical engineering. Without that, will I ever have all the other things I dream of? Maybe; maybe not. However, without a college education, things like becoming a homeowner will be much harder. What about my dream of becoming an engineer? That is a dream that is impossible to reach without a degree. College is in my immediate future, as in, less than a year. By next fall, I will be enrolled at my local community college, where I will spend two years studying before transferring to a four year University to complete my degree. In the year 2020, I will graduate, and this will start me down the path I see my future on.
Getting an education can change your life. It DOES change your life. From being able to provide a roof over your head, to enabling you to reach your dreams, education gives us so many opportunities. With a college degree, we are lifted up. We become problem solvers, critical thinkers, and goal reachers. Education gives us the tools for a successful future. I don’t see the next ten years without it.
