My Life, My Passion, My Future by Kierstyn - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
My Life, My Passion, My Future
In the distance, sheep are baa’ing, cows are bellaring and chewing on their cud, and the smell of sweet diesel from a tractor is creeping towards my face and up my nose. I smell the sweet aromas of the freshly spread manure of the fields close by and my neighbors waving by as they pass the beautiful farm I have accompanied by a future partner and children of my own. The most beautiful sight I can begin to picture in my head in my future 10 years is this.
Where I grew up, it was very rural. FFA was the main organization to be in at my high school, which was also surrounded by three cornfields as well as multiple dairy farms and amish communities. I was considered a ‘tomboy,’ even though I occasionally dressed to impress on a few select days out of the entire school year. Jeans, t-shirt, and my cowboy boots was the daily attire for a normal school day. In my community, everybody had a truck, a tractor, or a livestock animal of any species. For me, my family had a truck, we have complimentary access to virtually any tractor we could possibly need on the farm, and my family also had a very diverse selection of livestock from dairy cattle to beef cattle to sheep of several breeds and to pigs. My passion is agriculture, and I intend to continue to prosper in this field.
I see myself working at a high school in Ohio that is placed in a rural setting particularly in Northeastern Ohio if possible. Well, that’s where I would want to be, anyways. However, that may change depending on the need for the education of agriculture. If I have to, I will start my own FFA chapter from scratch. You might ask why would I want to be an agriculture teacher. The answer is that ever since the seventh grade, I have been in FFA. Okay, maybe not exactly a member, but I helped with their fruit sales and their contests. I have enjoyed my time as a Northwestern FFA Member and I want to give the kids in the future the experience that I had and make it better. I never want to leave this organization so this idea kind of forced me to change my major to be an agricultural instructor. College might not be the easiest to accomplish at The Ohio State University, but I will get through it and I will become an agriculture teacher and give my future students the feeling of accomplishment, happiness, and hard work to get what you want.
My future career, if that has not already been established in your mind from reading this, is to be an agriculture teacher and be connected to the FFA Organization. I have prepared myself in high school by taking as many college courses and agriculture courses as I can in high school, hoping my college credits will transfer. After my high school years, I will then go to The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio to start my Bachelor’s Degree in Agriscience Education and I also plan to double major in Livestock Sciences specializing in small ruminants and get my Associate’s Degree in this area. After my two completed years at The Ohio State University ATI, I plan on transferring to The Ohio State University Main Campus in Columbus, Ohio to finish out my Agriscience Education Bachelor’s Degree. After my completion of college, I will then look for job opportunities in Northeastern Ohio and find a school to make my mark. In ten years, I will be teaching the youth of Ohio about the biggest and first industry to ever make its mark in the world; agriculture.
There is a need for agriculture education in the world and I will be one of those people to make a difference in the lives of students pertaining to agriculture and success. My teachers have given me the drive to pursue this dream and I will prove to them that I can run a success chapter, and that I will live up to their expectations and more. My students will graduate wanting to make agriculture better and to strive to want to educate the uneducated. I hope one day that all of this will come true, that everything I have ever wanted will fall into place and finally round my life and expectations with my dream job. The farm, the tractors, the trucks, the agriculture, the success, the dream, the want to be better; all of this makes up what my life would look like in ten years.
