Learning With Your Hands by Kayla - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

School is something that every student is required to experience, and even though some students do not entirely like it, there is always one aspect that keeps them going. For some it is communication, the fact that they will be able to speak to and see their friends. While for others it is the books, the ability to read and enter into a whole another world of imagination and problem solving. Education is made up of many different aspects, and the one that I am most grateful for would be the hands-on activities.
Hands-on projects allow a student to directly observe what it is they are supposed to be learning. I am a kinesthetic learner and through hands-on activities the curriculum that I learn in class tends to stick with me longer than the material that I learn from simply writing down notes. Sometimes when it comes to learning it is best to witness the situation yourself. When I think back on all the things that I learned during school the things that I remember most are the lessons that I physically participated in. Everyone’s mind works differently and for mine I remember the things that I learned actively because they become like a memory that I carry forever.
Not only do hands-on activities last a life time but they also are a good way to develop problem solving skills. Hands-on activities can force a student to figure out how to do a particular problem while improving their process of elimination. A student can take the problem solving skills that they learned from the hands-on activities at school and convert them to skills that they can use in everyday life and on the job of the career that they wish to pursue.
Along with life skills and a memorable learning experience, a hands-on project can also work on the student’s communication skills. After graduating and entering the work force, communication is a very essential skill. Just like a student will have to sustain problem solving skills, they will also have to understand the importance of teamwork. A hands-on activity can teach a student how to work well with others in a sufficient way while learning the lesson for that day.
There are magnitudes of hands-on activities that are out there at a student’s disposal. It is up to the student to take advantage of these activities. Thanks to the hands-on activities that my school offers I am well prepared for my career path, and I have learned very imperative skills that I can use in daily life.
