In A Decade by Kailee - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Education is the keystone upon which my success in life will depend. As a senior, I can honestly say that two-and-a-half of my years in high school were complete and total failures. I never did my assignments, never paid attention in class, and expected to get by without proper schooling. All of this changed after my first semester of junior year, when, in a matter of months, my term GPA rose from a 1.7 to a 4.0. I had come to the conclusion that skating by on life wasn’t the way to go, and though this rectification of my immaturity won’t expunge the reputation I have already made for myself, it has taught me the true value of a formal education. I didn’t expect much from myself, but now that I do, I know that I am capable of achieving the goal that this essay will present.

In the next ten years, I intend to devote my time, energy, and surely most of my finances, to furthering my education. I have to make up for those grades that I allowed to drop in freshman and sophomore year, so I’ll be attending a two-year college in the Fall of 2016 and using the grades I achieve there to transfer to a four-year institution. At that institution, I will center my studies around History and Museum Studies, possibly Political Science, because I have a love for the world and want to devote my life to it. Though museum curation may not seem like the best career for someone who wants to make a change in the world, it will put me in the position of a community leader in charge of the facilitation and enrichment of public learning. I can’t change the rest of the world until I change my own part of it.

I used to dream about moving to Massachusetts as an adult, but with the weight of familial responsibility and need bearing heavy on my shoulders, this plan has become impractical. Instead, I hope to assist in the rehabilitation of my community, on behalf of all who inhabit it. I currently live with my grandparents, in a home that will be turning 100 years old in 2020, so I hope to inherit it after my family’s passing and put in the work to make it the home of my dreams. These all seem like small, petty dreams, but to me, they are perfect.

A decade from now, I see myself as a happy, healthy and intelligent professional leader of my community.
