Extracurricular Education by Kadie - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

When it comes to my education I can not be more thankful for the opportunities that have been presented to me. Between the wide range of classes that are offered, to the skill level of my teachers, my education has been overall successful. More than the classes and wide area of knowledge that have augmented my brain, the part of school I have most enjoyed and am most thankful for is the extracurricular activities that are provided through the school.
I am fortunate enough to attend a high school that provides a variety of organizations to choose from. They have something to suit almost everyone's interests from art and choir to FFA and sports. I happen to be involved in three of these amazing activities. I am so thankful that I have been presented the opportunity to be a part of our school’s show choir, cheerleading, and my position as a senior class officer.
Extracurricular activities are extremely important to me. They have given me multiple chances to meet new people and also a place to fit in within my school. When I felt like I did not have any friends these activities provided companions with my interests and I now have friendships I wouldn’t trade for anything. For one instance, I went from never going out and being a home body to being invited out to eat and to hang out with friends. I would have never even had these friends or experiences if it would not have been for activities such as choir or cheer.
Another reason I am so thankful for these educational activities is because they have shown me it does not matter what “clique” you are in; everyone should be treated the same. Considering I am in a wide range of activities I have experienced people from the nerd and prep side of things. The truth is people are not that different on both ends. Individuals in both groups seem to have a spot that they click. There is the cute one, the bossy one, the shy one, the list could go on for forever. Although, I am not exactly sure where I fit into the equation yet. I am still so grateful and fortunate to have been able to see that it does not matter if you are popular or not. I used to be very judgemental without even realizing it, and now knowing this many people has opened my eyes to one simple fact; we are not so different after all.
In the end I could not be more thankful for extracurricular activities. They have opened my eyes to a greater picture far beyond who the “cool kids” are. Although I may not be very thankful for the work given at school, I will be eternally thankful for the lessons I have learned and the friends I have made.
