What Challenges Me, Changes Me by Justice - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
The aspect of my education that I am most thankful for is my school’s Advance Leadership program. I entered my Freshmen year as shy and quiet. I did not want to draw attention to myself. Enrolling in the Advanced Leadership program forced me to face the very thing I always tried to avoid. What challenges you, changes you. This challenge changed me. Throwing myself into that class I became involved in every possible event. Community services such as fulfilling students Winter Wishes and organizing a March of Dimes fundraiser kept me wanting to do it all. Serving as Junior Class Vice President and Association of Student Body (ASB) Vice President provided me the opportunity to be a part of Mt. Baker Leadership Camp and Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL). Participating in these two major conferences I have learned how to work with diverse groups of people and to plan successful school and community events that enhance people’s lives. Also, I learned to take into consideration student’s individual stories which allowed me to plan events that account for their own basic needs and values. Attending these conferences I became more confident in myself, in my leadership, outreach, and public speaking abilities. The challenging opportunity to collaborate, communicate and lead others to meet a common goal has been extremely rewarding. These are characteristics that are foundations of who I am today. In addition to the benefits of leadership I also play varsity soccer and run varsity track. The tools I learned in leadership I have carried over to the soccer field. Today I am captain of my high school soccer team and an active student leader.
As I reflect on my high school years I start to contemplate my future. Who am I? Who do I want to be? I concluded that I want to become a part of something else. I want to give to others of my time and talent. The feeling of helping others is very gratifying and I am hoping to pursue a career in the healthcare field.
I am thankful for the Advanced Leadership program and character attributes that I have gained from being an active part of this program. I realized that a full life brings events that challenge us. I have learned that the more you give of yourself to your goals the more you get out of the journey to those goals. A new part of my journey will begin and with my strong faith and dedicated work ethic I know I will rise to the challenges.
