Ten Years Is Just TIme by Jason - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
In ten years time, only the minutes and hours will have rapidly and abundantly passed, all with a sigh or regret, because my goals─Bucket List, if you will─has already been implemented. But, this path that is already being walked is not one that leads to success or personal gain, but rather a very pleasant road where I can lead my wife towards the accomplishment of her dreams. You see, I am in a rare predicament in that I have done what I wanted to do. It was my father who instilled the need of having something to look forward and attempting to accomplish that goal; because, when old age hits us, sometimes our dreams are put on the back-burner, eating us up with regret and nostalgia about what could have been.
This is not me. When I was a greenhorn graduate from university, I moved overseas and lived in a foreign country (something I always wanted to do). And, the years passed and I got to do what I wanted to do, checking the items off my bucket list one by one. Then, I got married, and my wife told me that had always wanted to live in a foreign country, just as I had done for many years. But, she didn't have the opportunity to walk that path, mainly due to family problems and various side roads that kept her a sad distance from what she really wanted to do. My heart melted and I at once understood what I needed to do.
My wife wants to see the world, and I want to make that possible. The road less traveled for her is now where we are walking hand in hand on to our next stop, which is university for me again so that I can get my teachers license. The plan is for me to continue in my career as a teacher, but I first need to get certified in America. For a long time, I have worked as an ESL teacher, which has allowed me to live in a foreign country, and it could potentially allow both my wife and I to continue living in different foreign countries. You see, the teaching license is required for applying to the DoDEA requires the acquisition of a teaching certification. So, I have applied to take the necessary classes to get licensed, and then it is off to military bases around the world where I can continue with my career; but, most importantly, I can offer my wife the realization of her dreams.
However, tuition costs are posing an issue, just as they do for a large majority of university students. I am not alone in this struggle, so a scholarship will help with me continuing with the job that I love and it will help with bringing my wife closer to a life that she has dreamed of for a long time.
And, in ten years time, goals will be accomplished and I will be able to see my wife smile as she tells her family and friends about the adventures she has had in foreign countries, and I will be able to experience all this with her, because living in a foreign country has also been my dream all my life. Ten years down the road will see my wife and I living the bright future we have planned. it is not time that matters, it is space and the life my wife and I will walk as we see foreign streets.
