A Step Above Ideology by Janet - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Many of the kids I grew up with pictured themselves drinking, partying and living the life, when growing up. My look at growing up was not the same though. Coming from a family that drank their life away over depression was what I saw a lot of the time, older cousins who were gang affiliated and ones that sold drugs was something I remembered seeing also. When it came to school no one cared about education in my family. Everyone who attended school dropped out and worked because they thought getting an education was a waste of time.
My dad was the first one in in this family that got an associate’s degree. It’s a blessing to have a father who always encouraged me to continue my education to become a better individual. He set an example that was hard to break. The day of my graduation no one attended but my parents, A first I felt disappointed to see that no one else in my family went to congratulate me, but then I came to a conclusion that my parents were the most important supporters, you might ask yourself why I’m talking about all of this, the reason why I mention all these things is because I am proud of how far I came in the last 10 years of my life, I feel like I have succeeded in many ways.
Where do I see myself in ten years? Well, currently I am working on my associates degree in Criminal Justice to move on into getting my Bachelor’s degree. I decided on doing Criminal Justice because I want to help people. My goal is to save lives and help those who are going into wrong paths change their direction. My family hates cops, I get called a pig for not being like them. I don’t care though I know that I am doing the right thing, I know that I will make a positive difference.
In ten years I see myself having a masters degree in Criminal Justice. I see myself being a successful element of law enforcement. This meaning being a part of the CBP immigration unit or working as a Parole officer. I see myself working to provide for myself achieving personal goals. Some being having a house or buying a car. I don’t see my self in debt in ten years, I want to manage my money carefully so that 10 years from now that situation won’t be mine.
Education is key when it comes to live long goals, the use of it is helpful and the work put towards it, is worth it. Thanks to my education I am becoming a better person each day. Working towards each day tells me its one day less till I can go out there an change the world through Criminal Justice.
