Not So Privileged. by Irrianne - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

No student should be required to participate in extracurricular activities to graduate. For a student to graduate they must have exhibited basic education. Most schools require its seniors to have a minimum amount of service hours to graduate. Students who aren't as privileged, must work to pay for school fees and manage to receive enough service hours.

Extracurricular activities are not for every student, that is why those activities are considered "extra." Instead, they are for the students who want to go above and beyond what is required. Colleges applications asks for a household income and job history. I have confidence that colleges can decipher what students choose not be involved between the students who cannot.

I understand what it is like to balance a job, academics, and extracurricular activities. Luckily I did not have to keep my job for a long period of time, or else I would have had to drop some extracurricular activities. Therefore, I could not imagine how difficult it would be for a student helping a parent to support a household or a student supporting their own education.

Obligating all students to be involved in extracurricular activities means all students have the money and time to be involved in those activities, and the students who are not so privileged will suffer the consequence.
