Pride by Halyn - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Fast forward ten years and I’m 27 with a very nice car, my dream career, and a soaring sense of pride.
Since I was young I have always had the dream to be a doctor. I am not sure whether the desire sparked from the image of me in a fancy white coat or maybe the hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even the fancy talk they used talking to their patients. Whatever the spark may have been, it has only expanded. While white coats, high paying salaries and medical vernacular are all fine and well, I have sense realized that the reason I want to be a doctor is because I have an internal need to help people.
Since I entered high school, I have worked extensively on the topic of human trafficking as modern day slavery. I joined a group advocating for the end of slavery, created my own speakers bureau and have sense traveled to advocate for the cause. I once thought that activism is what I wanted to do in the future because it is what I truly felt confident doing. But then I looked back on the scope of the scenario and realized it wasn’t necessarily the topic that fascinated me as it was the result. I was bettering someone’s life and potentially saving it.
While my activism was going strong I continued to have a love of science. It was once a natural skill but turned into an over-bearing curiosity. I absolutely adored the field. It was with that that I joined my love of helping people with my love of science to form a career; a doctor. It evolved from that as I became continuously more interested in medical genetics and the human genome. From there, gas was only added to the spark.
My prior education has helped me immensely towards my goal, as my school has pushed me to become the best possible version of myself. I also have taken an extensive amount of science and math classes, my senior year course load including Calculus II as well as four science classes. I have thus been preparing myself for the future through the opportunities available at my school. And while I have learned a lot in my years of high school, I am extremely excited to learn more in my years of college because what I learn there is what will give me what I need to do something truly amazing.
Obviously in order to be a doctor one has to attend medical school. Most dread this with thoughts of loans and MCAT’s, but I could not be more excited. Attending college as a Biology and Chemistry major will allow me to learn exclusively what I need in order to be successful in my attended career. Therefore, attending college is what will make me capable of saving someone’s life. And I could not be more excited for the pride and confidence I will have in school, knowing that I am well on my way towards doing something truly inspirational.
So: fast forward ten years and I’m 27 with a very nice car, my dream career, and a soaring sense of pride. My dream car will come from winning the lottery (of course). My dream career will be in a hospital as a medical geneticist curing patients of inheritable disorders. I will be using the knowledge I learned through my extensive schooling, wearing a white coat, making enough to get by, and speaking with the most sophisticated medical vocabulary known to man. Pride is what I see most distinctively in my future. After school when I am full to the brim with new knowledge, I will have the ability to combine this with my passion for science as well as my need to help people. This combination has the ability to do something truly revolutionary and there is nothing I would be more proud of.
