Moving Forward by Gabrielle - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

In ten years, I see myself as being a married professional publisher with a home outside of the United States so that I may benefit other cultures and countries with my talents, education, and skills. I believe these experiences will best fit my longing for new experiences and an independent work opportunity. An education will give me the credentials, background, and authority I need to succeed with these goals.
In order to become a publisher, one must have a degree in English literature or language, both of which I am interested in. Getting an education will allow me to therefore gain the credentials and requirements I need to pursue my chosen career.
Not only will a higher education grant me the educational tools and experience I need to become a publisher, but it will also provide me with life skills and new experiences I will make use of in other countries. While I am in college, I expect to learn more about other cultures and ways of life, as well as how to do household tasks such as pay bills and set up a bank account. If I were to attempt to move out of the country and become a publisher right now, I would lack the basic skills required to progress in life and would fail at simple household tasks. In the next four years, I expect to gain experience in these assets while earning my bachelor’s degree by learning from those around me and gaining new adult experiences. College is the perfect transition from dependent to independent living.
Along with experience, college will also grant me with authority. If I were to become a publisher right out of high school, who would listen to me? Getting a higher education is very important not only to my knowledge and experience, but also to my status. I will have many more opportunities in life if I am able to say that I got a bachelor’s degree in English at a respected university rather than a diploma from a public high school.
All in all, a degree and higher education is very important for one who is looking to succeed in life. For the opportunities and experiences it will grant me, as well as my own personal interest in knowledge, I look forward to taking advantage of a higher education.
