Back to my future by Francis - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Ten years from now I plan on being where I was ten years ago. Sounds a bit odd I admit but I am not your typical college student. Ten years ago I had my own house and two new cars. I was living life happily and comfortably with my wife and two kids. I was buzzing along peacefully in suburban life and felt that, for a change, things were how they were supposed to be. They hadn’t been for quite some time before then.
As life does it decided to shake things up. This is great when it does it and I end up the beneficiary but not so much when I don’t. This was one of those times I was on the losing end of things; lost the job, wife, house and cars. Luckily, the kids are happy and healthy and for all intents and purposes are doing just fine. Without going into too much detail the ex and I are decent at communication at this point and things are starting to come back together.
My mother who has been pestering me for years to get into nursing finally got her wish. I took inventory of the situation and part of my initial problem was picking a field that didn’t have much elbow room to move around. I needed to go into a field with plenty of job opportunities and as close to guaranteed growth as I could get. That pretty much narrowed it down to healthcare or IT. I’ve had desk jobs and did well but honestly I like working with my hands. What better way to get them dirty than in nursing.
So here I am; a single father of two kids trying to hack it out in college and start a new career. I’ve always been a “go getter” so I figured I’d shoot for one of the advanced nursing practices such as CRNA. That’s a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Since I just completed my first semester of nursing school I am about ten or so years from reaching my goal. Using my education to get there, I hope to be able to turn around and mentor more guys like myself hit by hard times. CRNA’s do pretty well for themselves’ so it will open up a lot of doors I would previously never have had access to.
