There Eventually by Esra - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Ten years from today, I will be 30 years old. The plan is to be a doctor specialized in optometry.
Making a difference in a person’s life for the better, whether it’s a one-year-old child or a ninety-year old adult, it will always help in a positive way. As a student in college, my dream is to become involved to change people’s lives by making a world slightly a safer place and advancing myself to become a better person. It’s a benefit for all. I get the opportunity to educate myself throughout college and medical school to become an optometrist. Optometry will teach me to work with others and to exercise self-patience. Being patient is one of the most challenging attributes a person can practice. Each situation and its level of patience can gradually help me with experience on how to deal with future obstacles.
Developing relationships with clients as a friend rather than a doctor that is seen every once in a while will help foster trust and support. Some clients need that type of relationship, as they might not have that otherwise.
Some individuals go through the educational system of many years to become a doctor or somewhere in the healthcare field for the reason of money. It is true that money is a big part of a healthcare career, but I feel that caring for the job and being honest with one’s self is a large part of making a career worthwhile.
Additionally, hoping to become an optometrist, I finally can have the prospect to share my personal story of having surgery at a young age due to a lazy eye because of astigmatism. Growing up, I’ve been told this story many times and how hard it was for me to go through school and everyday life as a seven-year old with complications in reading and concentrating. Up until at this age of 20, I was inspired and wanted to continue my education in the medical field and pursue optometry.
Meanwhile, after graduating from College of Optometry at my dream college in Oregon, I plan to open up a clinic and organize a day of the week that the examination prices are discounted 50% off because not many people are able to afford the health of their eyes. Healthcare isn’t always available to everyone. It would be my honor to assist those in need and care for them to my very best.
With all of these dreams and plans, it all starts off with being able to afford the education and build myself up to a successful human being that can help others in a way that will make me very content. As of today in college, it is difficult to keep up with college expenses such as tuition, transportation, books and supplies, etc. Medical schools are very expensive and one cannot imagine any other way to pay other than loans. Many have to juggle through work and school. It’s difficult to try to focus on classes if work is involved. If money is provided, the journey would be much easier and a student can keep their mind to the plan and successful future. It’s a long way through to become an optometrist, so a little aid financially would be really appreciated and a little weigh off my shoulder. After all, as a person who will spend many years to study and pursuing a doctorate degree, to make money, one has to spend money.
