Becoming a coach by Derek - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
I love the game of basketball! I love watching it and playing it. I’ve spent hours upon hours working out, shooting the ball, and practicing. I’ve learned about teamwork and leadership and even used it to give back to my community.
Unfortunately I am not gifted with a classic basketball body. I have to work very hard to compete. I’m not especially tall or athletic, but I’ve learned there is much more to the game. Playing sports requires teamwork and unselfish behavior. Many times the right decision is to pass the ball and let someone else take a game winning shot. Sometimes I’ve had to sit on the bench and watch others play. These are hard lessons but valuable ones. In leadership, many times it’s important to let others have the glory.
A few years ago one of the directors of our community sports program at our church asked if I would help coach a kid’s team. I thought it might be fun but didn’t expect much. After the first practice I was hooked. The kids looked up to me because I was a “big” basketball player. They were excited to learn and I loved showing them about the game. My main goal was for them to love playing and leave each practice and game feeling great. Many of the parents thanked me and said their children loved it. Since then, I’ve coached a team each season. I will start my 3rd year of coaching very soon and I can’t wait.
Sports teach many life lessons. Some are fun and some are hard. It also teaches how to lead and about teamwork. I know sports will always be a part of my life. It’s especially great when I can use my passion to influence and encourage others.
