Disordered, Disheveled, and Disorganized by Delsabriana - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
The teacher towered over the child’s shoulder, hovering her as she explored the abyss branded by JanSport. Then, suddenly the student pulled out a crumbled, coffee stained loose leaf of paper only to find it was her Calculus homework not her AP English report. Her teacher imprinted her grade book with a very zealous “F.” I would know because that girl is me.
Organized students tend to lead an easier experience in school, which means less stress for the student and in turn it can even influence their test taking abilities and scores positively. There are countless times where I find myself mid study session having to drop my assignment because I have misplaced my notes. Seconds, minutes, time is lost that I could be studying. In the moments I search for my papers and set up my desk to finally study, I have wasted over 30 minutes that I could be using to study for my final! Believe me, my grade on my last can confirm my claim.
There have been countless times where my mess has become a distraction to my studies, as a result I have engaged in multitudinous hours of undemanding activities and hours of procrastination. Thus, I mastered the one skill my high school teachers spent 8 hours a day, 5 days a week trying to engrave in my brain to never do. So much for that, right?
My organizational habits have also led to an unintended side effect. As my notes became neater I hope to find myself absorbing information at an increasingly easier rate. Flow charts. Maps. Techniques that mirror my new gained habit. These will help me study for my exams, furthermore aiding and not causing an impediment to my academic career. Which like anyone in high school or any grade level, that has the common goal to strive and achieve success to the best of our abilities. Things that aren’t in ship-shape tend to hinder my educational accomplishments because, fundamentally, I become idle and I want to avoid that this year. The potential to change my habits is superior than it has ever been as I can see through the looking-glass, all the opportunities available for my taking.
