Benefits of Extracurricular Activities in High School by Cassie - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

I believe extracurricular activities should be required for a high school graduation because it helps develop a more rounded person. Almost every high school offers some form of an extracurricular activity ranging from various sports, music, drama/theatre, academic institutions, art clubs, and church organizations. Each student is given an opportunity to thrive in a field that they excel in. It is statistically proven that when a student is involved in an extracurricular activity they are more inclined to be structured with their time, have consistence attendance, and better grades.
I have personally been involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Youth Commissions International Bible studies, Beta Club, National Technical Honor Society, and I am on the girls’ soccer team at my high school. Although it is time consuming; I have learned time management skills that I believe are important to prepare me for college and future schedules that I will have.
Being a part of a team or club encourages student to be at school. If the student is not at school then they are not allowed to participate in their extracurricular activity. Being involved with a sport or club helps create teamwork, friendships, and responsibility. They learn accountability by being at practice or attending meetings, because other students and teachers count on them to be there. Studies are shown that students who are involved in extracurricular activities are less likely to get into trouble outside of school as well.
In order to be eligible to be on a sports team at any high school you will be required to maintain a certain GPA to play. At Rock Hill High School a 2.3 GPA is required from your core classes. Also, in order to join an academic club you have to maintain a certain GPA. Many of the clubs will send out invitations to those whom have the grades to be able to participate. This promotes students to take initiative and work hard in their classes.
Therefore I believe students grow emotionally, physically, and mentally from being involved with their school. Not only does being involved have a positive impact on their high school years but also equips them for a smoother transition into their college or work years.
