Struggles of Senior year by Candace - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

Most kids have school for seven hours, do three hours of homework, workout or play sports, do normal chores at home, eat dinner with their family, and do other activities that go into a regular day, so where does that leave time for extracurricular activities? It does not, and that is the struggle I deal with everyday. I have to deal with going to college and high school, having time to work out, having time for family and friends, and having time to do my regular chores.
First, I attended a total of nine hours of college and only one hour of high school, so I do not run off the high school schedule. My schedule runs where when everyone at the high school eats lunch or attends the club meetings I’m in class at Cameron University. Then when I am not in class I am buried neck high in homework. For instance, right now I have three papers due, a quiz, and a test coming up, which I will need to study for. I cannot slack off on my work to attended club functions, but I need those activities to look good on scholarships, right? The problem is I also need good grades, and to get grades I spend a tremendous amount of time in class or doing homework.
The second problem is if I did all the extracurricular activities offered they would not leave me time to work out. I need to work out because I want to stay in shape. I also need to work out because I want to major in sports and exercise science, which is all about teaching people how to stay in shape. Last, I need to work out because I injured my shoulder in swim a year ago and to avoid surgery I have to keep the muscles strong in my shoulder. So, working out is necessary for me just to stay healthy and surgery free.
The third reason I do not feel extracurricular activities should be required is because it does not leave me time for my family and friends. I adore my family and friends and value every minute with them. I love just eating dinner with my family, and talking about their days, because I know soon I will be moving off to college, and will not get to do that as often. I also love hanging out with my friends, because we will soon be moving off to go pursue are futures. For the most part though I just love being around the people who encourage me every day, and help me succeed.
The last reason I do not feel extracurricular activities should be required is because it does not leave me time to do normal chores around the house. I need time to wash my clothes, and iron them for the day. I also have a dog that needs my love, affection, and a ton of food. I need time to clean my room and take the trash out. I just need time to do normal day to day activities people have to do.
In conclusion, I do not feel extracurricular activities should be required for high school graduates. I feel that making good grades and attending school is more valuable to me then extracurricular activities. I also feel that working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important. Next, I need time to spend with my family and friends, since I will be moving off to college soon. I finally need time to do my regular day to day chores so I have clean clothes and such items I need. So, why make extracurricular activities required when everyone is already struggling to get everything done?
