Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? How will your education help you get there? by Camile - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Greetings. I am currently enrolled at Beulah Heights University pursuing a Masters of Atrs Degree in Religious Studies. I am also the Senior Pastor of the Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Macon, Ga. I am also a part-time GED Instructor with the Atlanta Public School System. I love working with people, helping people, and getting involved in the community. I am married with five beautiful childern. I have two daughters in college, two sons in high school, and one son in middle school.
As a Pastor and GED Instructor, I come in contact with all kinds of people. I also provide counseling to people on a daily basis. As a Pastor, I visit a lot of people in the hospital, prison, hospice, and nursing homes. I enjoy working in that capacity. The services that I provide brings joy to those who I come in contact with. Also, this gives me an opportunity to meet people, minister to people, be active in the community, and to provide services to those who need them.
In the next ten years, I see myself continuing as a Senior Pastor and working as a Chaplain. The education that I already have and the education that I am obtaining is preparing me for this. I have earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University. I have worked in Corrections, Prebation, Juvenile Justice, Investigation, and Mental Health. While pursuing the Masters of Arts Degree in Religious Studies, I have taken classes in Grief and Loss Counseling, Chaplain Training, Bereavement Counseling, and Theology.
The training and the experience that I'm getting is giving me more wisdom and knowledge in these two fields. I believe that Pastoring and Champlaincy go hand and hand. As a Chaplain, the majority of the work is done in hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, and hospice. One of the requirements in becoming a Chaplain is to have a Masters Degree in Divinity, Theology, or Religious Studies. Earning a Masters in Religious Studies will qualify me for a position as a Chaplain. This degree will also give me more knowledge about the Bible and religion. This will enhance my ability to preach and teach the Bible. I also plan to obtain a Ph.D in Leadership and Philosophy within the next ten years so that I can become a College Professor. I also plan to teach at a college, university, or seminary.
