Math of Course!!!! by Bryant - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
What aspect of my education that I’m thankful for? Math of course!!!
Education, time and money; what do all these things have in common? Numbers, numbers, numbers! For this reason I feel that math is the most important aspect of my education. I dedicate hours to studies, which in turn will equal an advanced education that will allow me to pursue a profitable career. This will allow me an opportunity to contribute to my family and community in positive manner. I divide my time between school, extracurricular activities, and family responsibility. This teaches me prioritization and responsibilities, which in turn will equal a balance in life and career.
At a young age I had developed a strong affection for math. By being exposed to child based cartoons such as Barney and Sesame Street, by the first grade I could perform basic math. As school continues and new challenges arise, mathematics remains an easy subject for me. Once I started high school algebra was very easy because I mastered the fundamentals. I must use math every day of my life. I use probabilities and statistics when watching basketball, here a team’s shooting percentage is calculated into fractions. Those fractions are used to compare player’s performances to see who is better at what stat. I work out at the gym to multiply my strengths in order to put out maximum effort in the sports I play. When scheduling my weekly activates I divide my time evenly so I can be as productive as possible. Mathematics allow me to count the beats of each note while playing my tuba, march and stay in time with the drum major while preforming in the marching band. Preforming this activity is very difficult, because your body is doing so many things at once. Marching band is a challenge for your brain to build focus and muscle memory. I use mathematics to calculate the distance of an arrow I launch during an archery match. To achieve a high score in archery, one must understand the distance the arrow must travel. The weight of the arrow. The timing of the arrow to travel in the wind. All these things factors are calculated using mathematics. At the end of a round, one adds the score of hits on the target. The score is determined on where the arrow lands on target. Only people with quick addition skills can find the sum of their scores accurately in a matter of seconds!
Mathematics also plays a big role in film production, the career I wish to pursue after college. While producing a film, one must know how much to budget for movies and use computer animation to program different shapes and sizes for the film. Cameramen, cinematographers, and lighting crews, use math to determine the timing of camera movement, exposure light balance, F-stop measurements and lens perspective. The budget for the film is most important. I must use the mathematics skills to pay the actors and crew. Having a strong understanding of math helps me understand the activities I am interested in.
Money plays a big role in life, especially how much one makes a year. After college I plan to become a film producer and editor. The median annual salary of film and video editors begin just over $51,000 and can be estimated to $114,000. While completing two years of technical school I plan to work part-time. This along with federal grants will help me remain debt free until I transfer to the University of my Choice. There I will combine my college education with my acquired knowledge, which in turn will equal a successful career. Completing my college education with less debt will allow me to contribute to society and become a productive citizen.
According to a famous quote, “Time waits for no man”, I continue to mature and distribute my time evenly among my responsibilities. I attend school for seven to twelve hours a day, I also manage my time to complete my assignments. When I am not preforming or doing homework, I am usually helping my elderly family members by running errands for them. This includes grocery shopping, housework, and sometimes even paying bills. I am also an active member of the youth department in my church. I participate by singing on the youth choir, hosting youth events and performances and fulfilling any other obligation my church when members ask of me. I have been a member of the youth choir since age six and preformed every second and forth Sunday. By spending more time in church and extracurricular activities I have less time to get into trouble and or get hurt. I put one hundred percent into everything I do to make sure my time is not wasted.
Mathematics is such a huge aspect of my life, and I am thankful. I appreciate the foundation that was set for me during my childhood. It has help to be add additional knowledge to my education, subtract the items that will be an unwanted distraction, and divide my time wisely to contribute to my community and family. All the opportunity mathematics has provided for me allowed and will continue to allow me to equal a productive member of society. Now that I have combined the numbers of this equation, I know the answer will equal success.
