My New Year's Resolution by Becky - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

New Year’s Resolution
By:Becky Lockwood

My New Year’s resolution is quite close to my heart. I live in Central Vermont and I have a beautiful younger sister named Taylor. Taylor is fifteen years old and we were both adopted through the state. We have been living together for at least fourteen years. Taylor has always inspired me and been a great sister and best friend, but all that changed.

My sister was diagnosed with major depression and anxiety. She was full of life at one point, and now she is like the living dead. She has attempted suicide five times and I’ve come so close to losing her. I came up with an idea to try and pass a law in my state. I wanted to make it illegal for minors to be able to purchase over the counter drugs. My sister tried to kill herself with easy access drugs from the store and I’m sure many others have.

My New Year’s resolution is to try my hardest to get this law passed! I am so close to getting it to my representative. I know my sister is getting a lot better, and she appreciates me doing this for her. I want to inspire her to get back up from where she is, like she always did for me when we were growing up. She is my hero.
