Thanks to Education by Arturo - November 2015 Scholarship Essay

I'm thankful for having the opportunity as a low income student to attend the University of California San Diego an opportunity that many other of my Mexican American friends did not have. Getting an education has always been important because doing so gave me the opportunity of pursuing a better life for myself and my family.
Growing up with a single parent has always been difficult because I did not have many luxuries that so many of my friends had. My mother always tried to give me as much as she could but I always realized and understood the limitations of what she could give me. She always encouraged me to go to college and get an education so I could have a better future for myself. I'm thankful for getting an education because I would like to help my mother live a better life and by getting my Mathematics degree and a better paying career. Acquiring an education is something she could not do in Mexico because of living in extreme poverty and she dreams of seeing me with a career that she could not achieve.

Acquiring my Math degree will help me because I will have the opportunity of getting a better job and being able to help my mother with whatever she needs. In addition, I will have the opportunity to give back to my community by teaching other low income students that struggle in mathematics just like I did and that did not have the opportunity for someone to help them. Acquiring an education is something I will always be thankful for; and I will have the opportunity to help other students that had the same background as I did to achieve their dreams.
