Ten Years From Now by Ariel - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Ten years from now, I see myself in a classroom that I hand decorated, with my last name displayed proudly on the outside of the door, sitting down behind my desk, helping a student perfect an essay that is very similar to this one. Or perhaps grading a stack of term papers that stands up to my knee, providing each one with feedback which will hopefully aid my students on their journey to becoming strong writers. I know that to some, this is an image of a dreary and boring future, but to me, it would truly be a dream come true.
I fell in love with literature at a young age. It all started when my mom tucked me into bed each night, and then spent at least half an hour reading to me. We read through all of the books written by Dr. Suess at least one hundred times each. From there, we went on to read about Curious George and all of the mischief that he always found himself mixed up in. Eventually, we made it to chapter books, and quickly read through the entire Magic Tree House series. As soon as I could read on my own, it was rare to see me more than ten feet away from a book.
Though reading was my first love, writing soon became an obsession of mine as well. I can distinctly remember sitting in my second grade classroom and writing short stories, which I would then bring home and read to my family. It felt amazing to be able to write my own story books with my own characters. To this day, writing is one my favorite ways to escape the unpleasantness of the real world.
As for my desire to teach, I am not entirely sure where it came from, but I know that it has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. When I entered high school, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher one day, but I had yet to figure out which subject or age group that I wanted to specialize in. It wasn’t until my junior year that I discovered that I wanted to be a high school English teacher. That year, I had an amazing, fun, and ridiculously intelligent English teacher, and just by watching her, I knew that her job was the one that I wanted. When I finally made this decision, I could not believe that I had never tried to connect my passions with my choice of profession before then, but as soon as I did, I knew that there was nothing else I wanted to do. Many people go to college because it is what is expected of them by their parents and society as a whole. I intend to go in order to pursue my dream job, one that I have been preparing myself for since I was a child.
