Extra-Curricular Activities by Andrea - October 2015 Scholarship Essay

Extra-curricular activities are not everyone's forte therefore; they should not be required to graduate. Some people are very involved in all the activities while others prefer to just focus on school. I believe extra-curricular activities should be just that - extra. Kids should not be forced to participate for many reasons - it would take away from their school work, not everyone is as confident and willing to participate, and lastly not everyone is available to participate in activities.

First, extra-curricular activities should not be required to graduate because it would take away from their school work. Not every student is able to balance school, activities, and a social life. If they are forced to participate in activities, their grades will suffer and this would make life more difficult for the student. The main courses you currently need to graduate are more important than an extra-curricular activity in my opinion. Extra-curricular activities are important and can help with real life skills, but they should be extra not required.

Second, extra-curricular activities should not be required to graduate because not everyone is as confident and willing to participate as others. Some students are very outgoing, confident, and willing to step out of their comfort zone, while other students can’t even speak up in class. There is nothing wrong with being quiet and nervous, these types of people shouldn’t be singled out and forced to participate.

Lastly, extra-curricular activities should not be required to graduate because not everyone is available to participate in activities. A lot of students are working after school therefore; it would make extra activities very difficult. Many students also have responsibilities at home to take care of. Balancing work, home life, and an extra-curricular activity could be very difficult for some students.

Extra-curricular activities should not be required to graduate. Everyone is different – some students would prefer to not be involved while others want to be involved in everything. Extra-curricular activities should be available for the outgoing students but not required for the more shy students. Extra-curricular activities would take away from students school work, not everyone is as confident and willing to participate, and lastly not everyone is available to participate in activities.
