Certified Tutor

John R. Hoaglund, III, Ph.D.
Dr. Hoaglund is a geologist with more than 35 years of experience in environmental research, teaching, and consulting in the private sector, government, and academia. He received his BS (1985) and MS (1987) degrees in geology from the University of Wisconsin, and received his doctoral degree in geological sciences from Michigan State University in 1996.

In addition to teaching assistant positions at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State University, Dr. Hoaglund has taught hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, environmental geology, and glacial / climate geology at the University of Michigan and Bloomsburg University. He held a research faculty position at the Pennsylvania State University. His research involves mathematical modeling of hydrogeological and geochemical phenomenon, usually at regional scales, including climate-hydrologic models at PSU, and completing the US Geological Survey (USGS) Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis (RASA) groundwater model of the Michigan Basin, a model used to calculate modern and Pleistocene groundwater and brine discharge to the Great Lakes and rivers in Michigan.

In 2007, Dr. Hoaglund resumed groundwater consulting, working on a Lockheed site involving perchlorate groundwater contamination in southern California, and the Nevada National Security Site (formerly Nevada Test Site), work related to the "legacy" groundwater contamination associated with historic nuclear testing. While reviewing the chlor-alkali electrolysis reactions involved in the manufacture of perchlorate, he recognized the potential for electrolysis reaction to consume salt waste while producing hydrogen and sodium hydroxide. Later, reviewing DOW documents about sodium hydroxide, he recognized the potential for CO2 aeration reaction to sequester carbon into bicarbonate. In 2010, Dr. Hoaglund founded Carbon Negative Water Solutions, a 501(c)(3) non-profit to pursue the "trifecta" of desalination brine management / water resource development, hydrogen production, and CO2 sequestration. In addition to the non-profit, he maintains a private research consulting and e-learning service, Provenance Geosciences.

Dr Hoaglund loves to teach. He holds a substitute teaching certification from the State of Nevada and has taught middle school and K12 mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry. He teaches the calculus necessary for mathematical modeling in his college courses, which he is currently working to bring online. He offers courses at Udemy and maintains YouTube websites in education as well as his own music performance. He has also taught lessons in saxophone, voice, and piano.
