My mission is to assist students in becoming life-long readers that gain meaning from complex text in order to communicate insights about a written piece to others through oral or written formats.
My literacy training enabled a vertical outlook of the overall learning objectives. Beginning with Pre-Advance Placement (PreAP) English, the rigor and support of the literacy process builds throughout a student's educational career. In addition, MultiCultural Reading and Thinking (MCRaT) provides strategies useful in a diverse range of materials. Literacy Lab (Lit Lab) provides a firm foundation of the teacher as a facilitator and is further enhanced by America's Choice Reader and Writer Workshop Models. The strategies and techniques I have garnered from these processes supplement and complement each other to create a highly effective learning process.
With such background, I seek to close gaps while pushing students to advanced levels.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I do believe every student is entitled to an enriching education that fosters their individual needs and interests. I encourage each student to take responsibility for their own learning while scaffolding their attempts. The learning should be meaningful to the student. Reading is at the foundation of advanced learning. It goes beyond decoding and pronouncing the text with speed and accuracy. Those preliminary skills are needed to gather meaning beyond retelling, to deep analysis and evaluation of text. These and other developmental skills must be reinforced to the automaticity stage, while a stairway is built to higher levels. Developmental education does not begin from scratch; therefore, student motivation for improvement is an added plus. The student is aware of a need for assistance and willing to work toward a higher level. I am there to provide such assistance that supports and stretches the student.
