LSAT Tutoring review by Gerard in Vancouver
In our final session, the student and I worked mostly on the quantitative section of the GRE for her upcoming test. We started by reviewing some questions she was unsure of from the practice work she had done for homework. Some topics we talked about included when to plug in numbers for variables; how to use the radius of a circle in a figure with multiple shapes, ratios, rates; and how to calculate percentages. We also talked about some timing techniques she can employ to make sure she uses her time efficiently. In particular, we discussed which problems she should skip.

The student will be re-taking the GRE exam on Monday, so we spent our time going over a practice test, going over problem solving methods, and reviewing concepts as they came up. She was working slowly, but she answered nearly every question correctly. For her exam on Monday, I recommend that she stay calm, relax, and focus. I know all the math skills we went over are stored in her brain, and staying calm will help her retrieve all the formulas we covered while aiding her in working accurately and precisely. I wish her the best of luck on the test; she has worked very hard and she deserves a solid score.

We reviewed questions the student had questions about from his review. The major hurdle seemed to be identifying what the question was asking for more difficult questions. He understands the concepts well; he just needs work on the tricks to solve hard questions. I have recommended a test prep book, as it provides an extensive amount of practice problems to work through to help him feel more confident in the tricks and tools necessary for the GRE.

We worked through a practice set that I had put together to target some of the problem types the student has issues with. It went well. We have one more meeting before his test, and overall, he is feeling very confident.

I gave the student a level test to see what type of questions she struggled the most with; it seems to me that parabola, arrangement/combination, as well as work problems (rate, time, quota) are the problems. I also went over some tricks that I summarized myself to speed up her time spent on the test. I sent her the rest of the test last night will. I think she's very smart and we will continue to go over her problem areas at the next session.

We went over the diagnostic test that the student took, and we briefly reviewed several topics (exponent rules, probability, algebra, counting, geometry, etc.). From what I saw today, she has strong algebra skills but we need to work on translating word problems and geometry problems into algebra problems. She has good math habits (writing out the steps quickly and completely). I think that the best way to help her will be to improve her confidence and proficiency in a few key areas, including geometry, counting/probability, and quadratics.
