Example Question #861 : Operations
Find the sum.
The correct answer is 841. We start in the ones column on the far right and add 6 and 5. This is 11 so we have to carry the tens digit (1) to the next column and being the ones digit (also a 1) down. Adding the tens column we get
so once again we carry the 1 and bring the 4 down. Next we add the hundreds column which
which we bring down. Thus the final answer is 841.
Example Question #16 : How To Add
If a plane left New York at 10:25 AM and landed in Miami, Florida 3 hours and 45 minutes later, what time would the plane land?
2:10 PM
1:10 PM
1:10 AM
2:10 AM
3:10 PM
2:10 PM
In order to figure out what time is 3 hours and 45 minutes after 10:25 AM, first deal with the minutes. 45 minutes after 10:25 AM is 11:10 AM. Now add 3 hours to that. 12:10 PM is one hour, 1:10 PM is two hours, and 2:10 PM is three hours. Thus 2:10 PM is the answer.

The sum is 125.
Example Question #864 : Operations
What number is hiding behind the starburst?
To solve this problem, you first need to see that the two addends make up parts of the whole, which is 22. Since the first addend is 4, we already know that one part is 4. To figure out the missing addend, we can either:
A) start at 4 and count up to 22
B) start at 22 and count back by 4
To double check the answer, you just need to make sure that when you put the two parts together, you get the whole, 22!
Example Question #861 : Operations
Hammond has 3 bins of crayons at home. Each bin has 5 crayons. Which of these number sentences could Hammond use to figure out how many crayons she has in all?
Because Hammond has 3 bins, and each bin has 5 crayons, you should add 5 together 3 times:
One way to double check your answer is to draw a picture of the problem and then see if the number sentence matches the picture.

Example Question #1086 : Numbers And Operations
A first-grade class went on a class trip to the circus. At the circus, Damya bought a hot dog and a drink. How much money did she spend altogether?
Damya bought a hot dog for cents and a drink for cents.
First, add the tens together. 5 tens and 3 tens make 8 tens, or 80.
Next, add the ones together. 4 ones and 5 ones make 9 ones, or 9.
. You can start at 80 and count up 9 with pictures, on your fingers, or you can just know.
Double check your answer by drawing tens and ones, then counting all tens and counting on by ones:
||||| + ||| = 8 tens.
**** + ***** = 9 ones.
Example Question #21 : How To Add
If Orlando's practice lasts a half hour, or thirty minutes, the minute hand will move halfway around the clock, or thirty minutes. Since it started at thirty minutes, it will move halfway around the clock to 60 minutes. The hour hand will also move halfway between two hours.
