Learning How to Believe by Zaria - May 2015 Scholarship Essay

New lessons or skills constantly surround people everyday. I find it easiest to learn new things by being observant. There is always something to learn, whether it be good or bad, in any situation a person witnesses. I am fortunate in having been able to take AP and honors classes throughout my high school career, because I had the opportunity to constantly surround myself with people who know how to work hard to achieve what they want. I find that I am always learning from my peers and their success and their failures on a daily basis in my classes.

The biggest lesson that I have learned over the years is how to truly go after what you want, not only in school but also in life. We all have goals and aspirations in life and sometimes staying focused on that can be difficult. This year I have had a really difficult time with staying confident in myself about achieving my dreams. I had a lot of self doubt and started feeling quite down about myself. If I have learned anything from this year it has been how to keep going after what you want no matter how far fetched it may seem. One of my good friends, Cody, is graduating ranked number 1 out of a class of 352 people. There is no way that he could have gotten to that point had he not believed in himself. While some of his success had to do with his academic journey it had most to do with his own determination. Luckily I have had many friends in my life with their own success stories. Whether it had to do with getting scholarship money or winning a playoff game there is always something being achieved in my group of friends. All of their own personal successes have been like lessons to me, because it has taught me how to focus on my goals and make them come true.

Learning how to believe in oneself may seem like a simple thing to do, but the older I get the harder it becomes to stay motivated. I have learned so much from my peers and I am extremely thankful to have them in my life. I know what I want in my life and I will not rest until I know that I have achieved it.
