Phone addiction by Zane - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
Everyone knows that being a good student requires a great deal of focus and dedication. This is hard to achieve with the constant distraction of my phone. Not only do I find myself checking it multiple times throughout the day, sometimes during class, for various reasons; on-going conversations with friends, checking for new tweets or snap chat post. I also spend entirely too much time on my phone after I get home from school. It’s usually more of the same, making sure there isn’t any updated post, and trying to legitimately text friends about homework turns into discussions about other things. These habits have forced me to make the hard decision to just put my phone down.
This is my resolution, just put it down. I would like to be able say that I will turn it off completely, but I am a realist and believe in baby steps. This will be hard. Maybe putting my phone out of sight will be helpful in the cause, but there could be an emergency that I am required to know about and without a visual, how could I attend to such a situation? So for now, I will but all of my energy and effort into removing it from my hand and placing it beside the book or paper I am working on. This will necessitate my parents coming in and constantly checking on me, and I understand that, and I guess this will be a test of my will power, one that I will bravely take on to improve my grades and hopefully develop better study skills.
