The Purpose of Life Itself by Zachary - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Not a single living being, from the poorest of the poor and the weakest of the weak to the strongest of the strong and the richest of the rich, have dreams. Everyone everywhere wants something and will do whatever they can to make it a reality. One of the most effective ways to make dreams reality is through education. With it, people can gain a greater understanding of the world around them and be given outlets to impact others in a hopefully positive way. It is through our dreams that we impact others and it is through education that we realize our dreams.

Education has led to growth in myself and everyone I've met since the day I first started learning. Even if it's not in school, people learn through reading and talking. Consider, for example, the first friends people usually make. Nearly all of the friends I've ever made were made through school. Through education, people are also able to see much more of the world. For example, my school has many clubs. Through these clubs, I've been able to make impacts in the community around us because service is a very big deal. What made it a big deal is also school. School allowed me to understand the value of service based on the school's background. This new understanding and my perspective on life also gave me the first ideas of what I want to do with my future.

I was born a handicap and, as a handicap, I have a different perspective on life than most. I see many things as problems that others find enjoyable. Beaches, for example, have been a challenge every time we go to one. It was through my understanding of service that I came to realize that I wasn't the only one with these problems. While I hope I would have come to this conclusion anyway, education drove me to it much sooner. Not only that, but it is through further education that I will put my plan to own a business and help others like me in action.

Education leads people to reach for their potential from the time they're very young to the time they're significantly older. Education allows us to help others in ways significantly more advanced than we were ever able to do before. Through education, I will build a company and help others like me. If I ever have children, their lives will be made better because of what I hope to build because, more than likely, they will have my disability. What does education mean to me? Education means making dreams reality, helping my community, and giving the children I may one day have chances that I've never had.
