The Future Is What You Make It by Zachary - February 2021 Scholarship Essay

The flow of society these days is tricky. Society tells us to graduate high school, get a college degree, and obtain a 9-5 job that has absolutely nothing to do with what you’ve been studying for those past four years because you had no choice but to pay off the immense amount of debt you’ve just earned. This problematic predicament has gotten hold of countless graduates, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. However, reality is changing whether you or I wish it not. The world of success is difficult to see without drive and hard work. I have always desired a meaningful purpose with my education, just like most people out in the real world. However, I always aim and obtain goals that I put my mind to. Anything that I have been passionate about and honestly strived to get better at, I have. Not through someone else's contributions, but by mine. I became captain of my high school wrestling team through previous years of exceptional determination and treating everyone around me with the utmost respect and humanity. I was personally invited to the Ultra World Championship Spartan Race in Iceland by founder Joe De Sena when I was only 17, one year after I began participating in the sport. I will tackle college and life no differently. I will learn beyond college, for I wish to learn as much as I can each day, to become the best person I can be for my family and those around me. That is what college success means to me. It means that I graduate with a sense of confidence and support in my capabilities to be an asset to my community.

My current major is Sustainable Energy Management, but that will not be the only area in which I hope to build upon over the course of my future. I want to build a better, more sustainable and healthier planet for the future of humanity so my children and billions of others can enjoy this paradise, as I have and will continue to do so for as long as I am able. My view of college success is that once I graduate, I will have prepared myself enough for the world beyond the classroom. Most kids stay in school for the best years of their lives. Then they're thrown into the world without a foundation on which they can learn and support themselves. My drive is to graduate college with that foundation so I can work towards building a successful future. My idea of success might be a little different than most. I don’t just want to earn enough money to support my family and future endeavors. I want to direct my diligent work ethic to a mission that improves society. I want to help humanity become better in any way possible, whether that includes working to restore the lost and destroyed environments around the world, or if it is working towards that next step in human potential through advancements in technology. Most of the people on this planet work for about a third of their pre-retirement lives, if not longer. My idea of success is that if you can be proud and fully supportive of your own work, then who can possibly tell you otherwise.
